Penthiobarbital Sodium Barbiturate Solution is available in vials of varying sizes:

Multi-dose vials of 20 mg, i.e. 1 g per vial and those of 50 ml, i.e. 2.5 mg per vial and via 200 mg ampoules

(200 mg/ml) for infusion in 0.9% sodium chloride. It is administered in two ways, namely:

intramuscular route

It consists of injecting a maximum dose of 5 ml deep into a large muscle in a single location for fear of avoiding irritation of the tissue. It is prescribed for an amount of 150 to 200 mg in adults and 2 to 6 mg in children without exceeding 100 mg.

intravenous route

As this is a very delicate operation that should not be mixed under any circumstances with other medications, its administration requires control of blood pressure, breathing and cardiac functions. An initial dose ranging from 100 mg for an adult from 70k with a flow rate not exceeding 50 mg/min. Via this route through the vein, its onset of action is almost instantaneous.
